The Painting Center, Inc. is a non-profit tax-exempt exhibition space run by sixteen member artists. Its purpose is to exhibit and promote painting in all its diversity and possibility; it does not champion one school or tradition. Works of emerging, middle-career and mature artists are exhibited.

The Painting Center’s Open Art Viewing Program offers the opportunity for painters to enter slides or CDs with digital images of their work on them. Their work is collected in a registry which is regularly consulted for inclusion in group shows in the gallery, or solo shows in the Project Room. In addition, the registry is available to outside curators.

There is at least one group show a year curated by a member, or members of the gallery. These “Selections” shows are largely funded by the gallery and supplemented by a small contribution requested from the selected artists.

If an artist is selected for a Project Room Exhibition he or she will be contacted. A Project Room exhibition requires a contribution of $800. This supplements costs subsidized by The Painting Center. The participating artist keeps 80% of any sale issuing from his or her show.

Deadlines

Submit slides or CDs between October 15th and March 15th. Submissions sent after the deadline will not be viewed.

To Apply

Please send the following:

1. A CD containing ten digital images (180-300 dpi preferred, up to 5″physical width), with accompanying documentation (as mentioned here for slides, and below) in a plain text file format. Or submit ten slides, each labeled with: artist’s name, title of work, date, size, and medium.

2. Artist’s resume. Artists’ statements are welcome, but they are not essential to the selection process.

3. A cover letter indicating your contact information and whether you would like to be considered for a solo show in the Project Room. (The size of the Project Room is 200 square feet.)

4. A self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of your material.
