Artist Biography
Born in Pittsburgh, Pa. Attended art classes at Carnegie Museum from age 10-16. Memories of blast furnaces shooting red flames in the dark sky.BFA Carnegie -Mellon University, studied with Balcomb Greene and Samuel Rosenberg. Graduate classes in printmaking and art-ed classes at University of Pgh. -MFA equivalent Studied at the Provincetown Workshop with Leo Manso and Victor Candel-met Alan Kleiman, painter, moved to New York- married Alan in 1963. Daughter Andrea in 1966.
Showed large earth-mother figures at the Area gallery, 10th St. 1964-65 Began to pour paint on small canvasses and then large ones at studio in Soho- Showed work at the Hansen Gallery, on Wooster St. in 1975-76- Had large show of abstract paintings at Frank Marino Gallery in 1979, as well as graphite drawings of unusual fruits and vegetables CAPS Award in Graphics, 1981. Natural phenomena a constant in the work, whether based on images from space, botanicals, landscape or the figure. One person show at p.s. 1 in 1986: series of drawings 6' x 24"+paintings based on forms in nature.
By the 90's, went back to the figure, abstracted, one person show at Dactyl Foundationin Soho-appeared on PBS speaking about the work. In recent years the work has been based on internal human anatomy, as well as imagery from space. Recent shows include WOMEN:DIVERSE IMAGERY at Andre Zarre Gallery, 2009, and GRAND GESTURES at the Broome St. Gallery, Soho, 2009.
