Candice Smith Corby

Artist Statment

This body of work, from an ongoing and growing series Love Notes Across Time, takes inspiration from literature, familial and personal love stories, poetry, song lyrics, dreams, memories, and the pleasure in observing treasured objects. Paintings vary from quick impressions to more investigative explorations. Some are more like fleeting thoughts. Through my combined efforts of studio research, teaching, and recurring travel to Italy, this new work reflects a continual investigation and interest in color and the origin of pigments and traditional materials. By rediscovering studio recipes from historic sources and re-enacting their applications within a contemporary context, process and image comingle and become a poetic metaphor for distance, loss, and desire.
