Artist Statment

Artist Statement, 2007

My current series of paintings draws inspiration from my female cultural heritage of quiltmaking, specifically the quilts sewn by three generations of the women in my family. These patchwork quilts are made from fabrics which span a century. The colors in the quilts are in different stages of fading or intensity depending on the material and age of the fabric. My work is always informed by color and for this series I have chosen to work with color combinations found in these quilts and draw on a heritage rooted in the expansive landscape of the American midwest.

This body of work explores the intersection of craft and modernism, pattern and color, movement and stasis. Color and form vibrate with rhythmic cadences which create movement, inward and upward. Flatness and space are juxtaposed. These compositions use the grid and diagonals to invoke landscape and create pattern.
