Douglas Newton

Artist Statment

My paintings are about light. Translucency, reflections, luminosity, all the ways light can transform our perceptions. My paintings of candy are more about the light on cellophane and foil wrappers than the candy itself. Other paintings are about light around and through paper, plastic or fabric.

I paint directly from life instead of using photographs, My compositions are very influenced by abstract painting, and use the rich, sensuous quality of oil paint to capture the beauty of what I see.

Artist Biography

I have been painting full time for about 17 years. My wife, Kathleen Migliore-Newton, is also a painter. Together we share a brownstone in Fort Greene with my daughter, son in law and grand daughter. I've had a number of one person shows and my paintings are in numerous private collections.
