Molly Herman

Artist Statment

Expressionism, Color Field and Process Art are influential artistic traditions to which my paintings relate. Of equal inspirational importance are decorative or folk traditions such as tapestry, textile prints and quilts of Gee’s Bend.

The pictorial landscape is used in my work as a place of entry into the abstract language of a painting. My process is through collaboration with the material of paint and all that paint can do. I pour, stain, build, scrape, weave and draw the paint with brushes and trowels. Each paint stroke is a visual-rhythmic measurement of hand and body, creating a scale and logic internal to the painting’s world.
