Nancy Olivier

Artist Statment

In this new series of paintings, I wanted to get away from the rectangle as a formal framing device, and allow the edges to elucidate the processes as part of its visual integrity. The most vital aspect of the work, this evidence of process, is the ‘material metaphor’ that allows the paint, as subject, to embody its meaning outside of ‘picturing’ narrative. The grid continues to be the major structural element in my work, but as an armature, not a hegemonic emblem.
