Suejin Jo, Korean born abstract painter based in New York, studied with Stamos and Vytlacil at the Art Students League. She exhibited widely in and around New York and in Korea. She won McDowell competition and was a visiting artist in the Drew University New York Semester on Contemporary Art program. She served as a Board of Control member for the Art Students League for three years. Her work is in many private and public collections including Library of Congress, Chase Manhattan Bank, General Instrument Company, Embassy of San Marino, Sogang University, and Korea Exchange Bank. She was recently a finalist for No. 1 line in MTA Art for Transit. Her painting “Blowing in the Wind” is currently in the “Art for Embassies” program.

Suejin Jo paints in the tradition of Lyrical Abstract Expressionism both in oil and acrylic medium on canvas. Her recent paintings are aptly described by the review below:

New York Times Nov 2, 2003: quoted from the review of the Parrish Art Museum show; Just plain good abstract painting is represented by SueJin Jo’s two acrylic on canvas, which seem to have picked up one of the promising threads dropped by the second-generation Abstract Expressionism. Anyone with a taste for melting colors and graceful lines will not be disappointed by the liquid translucence of “Watering Sky” and “Comet.” Both compositions are stabilized by schematic monoliths that play subtly against the sweeping linear arcs.
