Artist Statement
My paintings reflect my daily life in the East Village of New York City. Their range, from frenzied to restrained, has evolved with my ever changing perceptions of my surroundings. As I continue to pursue a more-truthful depiction, I am constantly adopting new visual languages. The friction between representation and abstraction allows the paintings to oscillate between the realistic and the conceptual readings.
Like my paintings, I am a product of my environment. I was born to a family that offered crayons and markers instead of toy guns and GI Joes. Later at the University of Pennsylvania, I studied Fine Arts under a department of dedicated professors. Graduating in 2004, I moved to downtown Philadelphia and painted the images of my new world. In January 2005, I left for Latin America. With rolled up canvases in my pack, I chronicled the thrill of constant transit and the volatility of the exotic landscape. July 2005 I returned from abroad and moved to the East Village, where I now live and paint.
