Excerpt:
“We “read” pictures in seconds—or at least we think we do—but the best pictures resist quick analysis. Instead, the nuance and complexity of their making offers a distinct and resonant way of seeing that invites lingering inquiry. In a world pervaded by commercial logos, high-speed images, and attention-grabbing gimmicks, it becomes all the more refreshing—and challenging—to encounter artists who have dedicated their careers to
both disciplined observation and imaginative synthesis.
Painting Structures: Specificity and Synthesis brings together 7 such artists who move beyond the static or sentimental motif to reframe habits of seeing. The artists represented in this exhibition—Rackstraw Downes, Stanley Lewis, Sarah McEneaney, Yvonne Jacquette, David Kapp, Sharon Horvath, and Kevin Wixted—differ significantly in style, but they all carefully—even obsessively—explore built structures. Whether they depict grand skyscrapers and stadiums or utility poles and underpasses, they return to certain sites or sources because they allow for a particular type of compositional analysis.”
