Lecture: Spirituality in Art by Mary DeVincentis

Saturday, November 14, 4 - 5:30 pm

Spirituality has been inherent in human creative expression since our very beginnings. Yet it is a concept with a fluid and multifarious definition. What we refer to as spirituality has evolved over time, becoming increasingly less tied with religion and no longer associated with a specific practice or path. Recent findings in quantum physics are beginning to overlap with and authenticate long held spiritual concepts such as that of non-locality and non-duality. Through posing a series of questions, paired with images of art from prehistory to the present, artist Mary DeVincentis will investigate a variety of perspectives concerning the appearance and the experience of spirituality in art.

Painter and printmaker Mary DeVincentis is currently working on Dark Matters, a series of paintings exploring the shadow side of human experience and Sin Eaters, a series which depicts society’s saints, martyrs, scapegoats and outcasts. Her work has been exhibited at Life on Mars Gallery, the International Print Center, the New York Public Library, White Columns and the Brooklyn Museum. It is work is represented in numerous private and public collections. She received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Printmaking from St. Martins College of Art in London, UK. She live and works in Brooklyn, New York.
