Support

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We are writing with important news—The Painting Center is in the process of relocating to a more vital and accessible location. Several months ago, when our landlord discontinued our lease, Painting Center members and the Board of Advisors seized the opportunity to seek a more advantageous location. After 16 years at 52 Greene Street, we are considering spaces in Dumbo, Chelsea, and the Lower East Side. We are visiting spaces, estimating renovation costs, evaluating the different art scenes, and preparing offers on several locations with great potential. We are also writing to ask for your support at this crucial time.

The Painting Center's members and Advisory Board are sustained and inspired during this transition by the organization's reputation for organizing outstanding exhibitions, providing vital opportunities for emerging artists, and catalyzing dialogue about painting. We are pleased that in the past, reviews of Painting Center exhibitions have appeared in distinguished publications including Art in America, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Harpers Bazaar, The Brooklyn Rail, The New Art Examiner, The New York Observer, The New York Sun, The Partisan Review, Art News, and Artforum. New exhibitions are already planned and awaiting the renovation of our new gallery space, where we will work tirelessly to broaden our audience and develop new outreach and education initiatives. Through our current relocation efforts, we hope to strengthen The Painting Center's commitment to supporting the work of emerging artists, recognizing exceptional achievement in painting, and fostering dialogue among artists.

Our current goal is to raise $60,000 in order to support our gallery relocation. We have obtained grants from the Wolf Kahn and Emily Mason Foundation, the Louis and Anne Abrons Foundation, the Alexander C. and Tillie S. Speyer Foundation, and several anonymous donors. We are pleased to report that we have already raised $35,000.

The Members, Advisory Board, and staff of The Painting Center hope that you will consider making a contribution at this crucial timeto sustain the Painting Center's legacy and renewal. We are eager to secure a new space, quickly complete renovations, and herald the rebirth of a larger and more visible organization. Please help The Painting Center continue to set high curatorial standards unfettered by market trends. Join us as we seek new audiences, support artists, and foster the vitality of painting during these challenging economic times.

Sincerely,

Shazzi Thomas
Director of the Painting Center
