The Painting Center presents a celebration of 25 years in the art world. The Painting Center began in 1993 by the founding members: Dana Gordon, Louisa Waber, Carl Plansky, David Fratkin, Marilyn Giersbach, Mark LaRiviere, Jenny Lynn McNutt, Lisa Lawley, Charlie Hewitt, Andy Watel, Riley Brewster and Tony Martin. After locating a space at 52 Greene Street in Soho, they transformed it into a gallery. In September of that year, they launched an inaugural show featuring forty-nine artists including Jake Berthot, Louise Fishman, Bill Jensen, and Milton Resnick. This exhibition celebrated the first season of The Painting Center and brought attention to it as a new exhibition space. The Painting Center moved to Chelsea in 2010. Now in its 25th year, This location has improved visibility and attracted more artists and visitors to exhibitions and programs. The Painting Center has shown the work of thousands of artists in the Main Gallery and the Project Room in various formats: solo and two-person member exhibitions, thematic group shows organized by outside curators or members, invitational and juried exhibitions. Exhibitions have been reviewed in The New York Times, The New York Observer, The Brooklyn Rail, Art in America, Two Coats of Paint, Artcritical, The New Yorker, The New Art Examiner, The New York Sun, Hyperallergic, The Partisan Review, Art News, Art Forum, New York Magazine and in online magazines and blogs.
This exhibition features current members, past members and friends of The Painting Center.
