MEMBERSHIP
The Painting Center is not accepting submissions for new members. We will reopen submissions when a slot becomes available.
The gallery is governed by its artist members and is overseen by an advisory board of alumni and supporters. The membership is responsible for organizing the schedule of exhibitions, maintaining financial stability, selecting new members, and carrying out the mission of The Painting Center. There are 24 members of The Painting Center at one time. As members leave new or returning members are admitted by a majority vote based on viewings of the artist’s work
Membership meetings are held monthly, and members are expected to attend at least 6 meetings per year. Members are also expected to participate fully in the operation of the gallery by joining two committees, most of which can be done online. Membership meetings have been on Zoom since the pandemic. The November meeting is our Annual Meeting and is mandatory for all members to attend. The Annual Member’s Meeting is an “in-person” event and held in the gallery.
As a new member, you can expect to have a two-person exhibition in the Main Gallery 24 months following your membership initiation, and a one-person exhibition in the Main Gallery, 48 months following your initiation.
The Painting Center is a non-profit gallery. We are funded by artist members, grants, curated shows funded by Foundations and artists, juried shows, and donations. There is an initiation fee of $500 for a new member. The membership dues per artist is $240 per month plus $20 per month for Artsy. The Painting Center is a gallery partner with Artsy. Artsy is used by art lovers, museum goers, patrons, and collectors. Students, and educators to discover, learn about, and collect art. The advantage of Artsy is the potential sales of paintings beyond the run of exhibitions in the gallery.
Other benefits of membership include: no commission to the gallery on the sale of artworks, representation by an art gallery in Chelsea, New York, participation in art fairs, a web presence on the membership page, opportunity to curate exhibitions, supportive community of artist members who visit each other’s studios and exhibitions, increased knowledge of managing an artist run organization.
The application process starts with a website review. Selected artists will be offered an informal interview with the members during a Zoom meeting.
