alisa Henriquez: Shimmer
Exhibition Dates: march 29 - april 23, 2022
Reception: Thursday, march 31, 5pM - 8pm
The Painting Center is pleased to present Shimmer, an exhibition of recent works by Alisa Henriquez in the Main Gallery.
This exhibition features kaleidoscopic, mixed media paintings which explore the intersection of material, representation, and desire. Combining digital images drawn from art history and popular media culture with paint, vinyl, fabric, glitter, and ornamental fragments, Henriquez merges figuration and abstraction in compelling ways in these works. Recurring motifs of aristocratic women, queens, and partially veiled goddesses intertwine with glamour images from makeover culture, anonymous hand gestures pulled from contemporary advertising and abstract figural contours. Suggesting we are in the midst of a cosmic, mysterious and radiant presence, these images create their own refracted histories as they trail through vectored spaces punctuated with acts of adornment and corrosive interludes.
Alisa Henriquez, born in Kingston, Jamaica, received a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington. Her work is represented by David Klein Gallery in Detroit and has been exhibited at many venues, nationally and internationally. Henriquez is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Michigan State University.
