The Painting Center is pleased to present selected works by Brooke Nixon in the Project Room. Brooke Nixon’s intuitive sense of color guides her painting. Her color is inspired by the seasons and the nature surrounding her home, particularly the large perennial flower garden outside her studio and the nearby coastal shore. Her color is also self generated thus connecting a more objective, universal sense of color with a more personal and meditative one. Having worked in oils throughout art school and for decades beyond, Nixon switched to acrylic paints within the last several years. Recently she has been exploring acrylic gels and other additives as well as metallic iridescent and interference colors to add nuance and richness to the work. Along with color Nixon uses a spare geometry to create a balance of visual movement and stillness. Her work holds the paradox of the dynamic and the contemplative.

Brooke Nixon lives and works in Brunswick, Maine. She received her B.A. in Religion from Wellesley College, Massachusetts and her B.F.A., with Honors, from the Portland School of Art, in Portland, Maine. She has shown work over a number of years in Maine, most recently at ICON Contemporary Art in Brunswick. In addition, Nixon has shown in New York, Paris and Amsterdam.
