Colleen Randall: Intimations

Colleen Randall is an abstract painter whose work explores space and light through the materiality of paint. In her work she seeks to investigate elusive states of consciousness through multi-layered depictions of form. In 2008 she was awarded a Whiting Fellowship to travel to Italy to study ancient Roman wall painting, which provided the inspiration for a body of paintings completed over the last four years. This exhibition traces the journey of her work from the monochromatic Livia’s Walls to the recent Intimations paintings whose radiant color intimates the inner light at the core of all being. Colleen Randall received her MFA in Painting from Queens College, City University of New York. A Professor in the Studio Art Department at Dartmouth College since 1989, she is the recipient of the National Academy of Design’s Edwin Palmer Memorial Award for Painting, a Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Fellowship Grant and an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Research Grant. She has been selected for artist residencies at Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Millay Colony and Landfall Trust in Brigus, Newfoundland. She has had solo exhibitions at commercial galleries and alternative spaces throughout the country, including Spheris Gallery, Kenkelaba Gallery, and The Painting Center in New York; Ober Gallery in Kent, CT; Elliot Smith Gallery in St. Louis; and Susan Conway Gallery in Washington, D.C. She has been a visiting artist at the Anderson Ranch, Vermont Studio Center, University of New Hampshire, Binghamton University, Haverford College, American University, Delaware College of Art & Design, Art Institute of Boston, Swarthmore College, and the Caumsett Summer Painting Program as well as numerous other universities, art institutions and colleges.
