The Painting Center is pleased to present Things That Were Never Said. This solo exhibition by artist Lisa Pressman is curated by Shazzi Thomas and Chase Cantwell opening Jan 31 on view through February 25, 2023. A reception will be held on Thursday February 2, 6-8 pm.
The works included in Things That Were Never Said refer to events in Pressman's life, revealing various depths of intimacy for the engaged viewer. Works on paper or panel are embellished with oil paint, ink, smoke, Letraset and thread. Pressman's textural compositions conceal and reveal portions of letters, color, and mark-making. These artworks embody a sense of being an artifact: generating a visceral allure via their potent sense of tactility. The art on view evokes a metamorphic potential, unleashed through ritualistic processes such as burning, sewing, and smoking and by embracing ambiguity and fragmented text. Titles such as Things We Never Said, Messages, Manuscripts and After Words suggest a mysterious form of ethereal communication. Rooted in the artist's own experiences, the layered abstracted works found throughout Things That Were Never Said reflect the grief that permeates the entire world. These compositions reveal a universal unconscious and collective memory exerting the power to reshape histories and futures.
