Martha Sedgwick: Where the Sea Meets the Shore
Exhibition Dates: October 27, 2015 - November 21, 2015
Reception: Thursday, October 29, 6 - 8 pm
Martha Sedgwick continues her ongoing series of paintings influenced by the ever evolving and dynamic natural environment of Cape Cod, where she has maintained a studio for 13 years. It is an environment both rugged and fragile and the daily intersection of time and tide are made manifest in the canvases textured surface. An accumulation of incidents builds as layers of strokes, lines and drips are applied, scraped down and repainted. The palette is one of coastal color, inflected with salt air. Through the language of abstraction, the observed world is brought into the artist’s studio practice.
Martha Sedgwick was born in Yorktown Heights, New York, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from The School of Visual Arts in 1978. She has exhibited widely throughout the United States and in New York City at Rosenberg + Kaufman Fine Arts, Stephen Rosenberg Fine Arts, Artists Space and The Painting Center. Her work is included in numerous private and public collections, including the W Hotel Group, McKinsey and Company, and Golden Artist Colors. Sedgwick lives and works in New York City and Truro, MA.
