Molly Herman

The Painting Center is pleased to present Flourish Forth!, the second solo exhibition by Molly Herman in the Main Gallery. This exhibition of paintings by Molly Herman explores themes of growth, change, composition as well as decomposition and regeneration, while allowing color, texture and light to lead. Through gestural brushwork and printed collage techniques, Herman’s paintings are about painting with nature as catalyst.

As Herman says, “In these still fresh pandemic years I’ve sought grounding ever closer to home – it is the communal garden, literally the back lot of my apartment building that has become my muse. The place I go first thing in the morning to sip coffee, weed, prune, draw -- then on to my studio.” A sense of creative spontaneity is present in each of these paintings. As Herman states: “to look as if each one were made in a single session, I turn the stretchers as I work so these paintings evoke creation in motion allowing perspectives to shift from near to far, inside to upside-down, and through.”

Molly Herman was born in Washington, DC and received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. In addition to several grants, fellowships and awards, Herman has exhibited at many venues including National Arts Club, in Manhattan; Amy Simon Fine Art, Westport, CT; John Davis Gallery in Hudson, NY; Dolby Chadwick San Francisco, CA; Sherry Leedy Contemporary, Kansas City, Mo.; Galerie Look and Listen, St. Chamas, France; and Holland Tunnel Gallery in Paros, Greece, among others. Recently, Herman collaborated with Zoetropic animator, Eric Dyer, and their work was featured in an animation film presentation at Arts University Bournemouth, UK.

Additionally Herman’s work is in many important collections including that of Larry Poons and Paula DeLuccia, George Faber, Counsel General of Luxembourg; Intuit Inc., Capitol One, Washington DC; Mountain View, CA.; Kansas City University, and MicroWorld Ltd.,Tokyo, Japan.

As a special event for this exhibition, Molly Herman and Ines Sun (Project room) will hold a “Tea and Art Talk“ hosted by TÉ Company on November 19th from 2 - 4 pm. ($20 per person, book your seat via: www.pencilnyc.com)
