exhibition dates: September 3 - 28, 2013
reception: Thursday, September 5, 6 - 8 pm
Patrick Webb will be exhibiting in the main gallery of The Painting Center a selection of paintings from the last 23 years that explore a single theme: Love’s Progress. Inspired by the great cycle of Fragonard paintings at the the Frick, The Progress of Love, and the recent Supreme Court rulings on gay rights, this exhibition explores the ways that love impacts the ongoing story of Webb’s ubiquitous character Punchinello. The exhibition also contextualizes Webb’s work both within its own development and also in relation to larger historical and cultural changes. This is Webb’s 15th solo show ( 7 in New York City ) exploring his unique interpretation of the tragi-comic clown. Webb has exhibited widely in 2008 he had a 25 year retrospective at the Provincetown Art Museum. He has received numerous awards including the Thomas B. Clarke Award in Painting from the National Academy of Art, 1998; Ingram Merrill Awards in 1995 & 1989, an Art Matters Inc. Fellowship in 1992, and National Endowment Awards in 1988, 1986, & 1982.
