The Painting Center is pleased to announce the solo exhibition Into the Aether by artist Seren Morey in the Project Room. The exhibition will run from April 25 – May 20, 2023 with an opening reception on Thursday, April 27 from 5 to 8 pm. This exhibition is an investigation into mortality and infinity. This body of work encompasses images that connote the Yin and Yang philosophy of opposite but interconnected forces. Monochromatic at first glance but full of subtle tertiary colors, the pieces mirror one another, dark versus light.
Aquatic serpents symbolizing cryptic wisdom and a reach for knowledge reside near works depicting spiraling sutures and roses. The rose image is suggestive of love and the underlying power of centrifugal force present in the structure of the universe. Ghostly branching patterns reaching like tentacles make an appearance in Sanctuary (2022) and among the voids in trinity of the Cosmic Solace pair (2023). The pearl emerges throughout. The physical meaning derives from its creation by the mollusk as a protection. In this work it adds an element of beauty that symbolizes the hidden knowledge within, and the suffering endured to attain it. Icarus Rising (2023) is the largest work in the show and is the focal point. With its intricately cut and sewn armature taking the form of wings, the painting is a testimony to second chances, patience, acceptance and the pursuit of ascension of thought.
