Twenty-Five Painters Under Thirty-Five
Exhibition Dates: June 23, 2009 - July 18, 2009
Reception: Thursday, June 25, 6 - 8 pm
The Painting Center is pleased to present an exhibition of paintings, Twenty-Five Painters Under Thirty-Five from June 23- July 18, 2009. The exhibition presents the work by 25 painters who are under the age of 35 years. Participating artists include: Abraham Storer, Benjamin King, Brian Friedman, Cecelia Rembert, Chris Segedy, Christina Kee, Clintel Steed, Despina Konstantinides, Liz Insogna, Gabbe Grodin, Heather Garland, Ivan Stojakovic, Jaclyn Conley, Joseph Zvejnieks, Laurie Close, Malado Baldwin, Matthew Farina, Meghan Wilbar, Monique Ford, Osamu Kobayashi, Sangram Majumdar, Sarah Hunter, Timothy Cleary, Ülgen Semerci and William Reed.
John Yau writes, in the catalogue produced for this exhibition, "Painting is a slow art, no matter how quickly viewers might believe they see and absorb a painting’s visual data. It takes time to make a painting, and it takes time to see it, in some cases far longer than it took for the artist to make it. And along the way, any number of things can happen. At a time when there isn’t any discourse telling painters what they should be doing, the situation is wide open and even scary. There is no dominant style, subject matter, or relationship to paint’s materiality or immateriality. You can work from direct observation, make everything up, or be conceptual in your decisions. There is no safety net; nothing that says this is the right or wrong way to go. Abstraction and figuration are two options among many. Some may regard such confusion (or anarchy) as unhealthy, but I am not one of them. The pot is simmering, and out of it many unexpected delights have been emerging, even if they have flown under the radar."
An artist’s panel discussion, in conjunction with the exhibit, will take place at The Painting Center the evening of July 1, Wednesday, 2009, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Panel participants include painters Malado Baldwin, Monique Ford, Will Reed, Clintel Steed and Ivan Stojakovic. The discussion will be moderated by Mario Naves. Curator Ryan Cobourn and John Yau, who wrote the essay for the "35/25" catalogue, will also be participating on the panel.
