Alix Bailey paints directly from observation; however she is not interested in the conventional aspects of portraiture. It is the human subject which activates her imagination and offers the possibility of transfomation from literal fact to a more abstract or poetic presence. In her own words, "I might want to paint someone because I love the person, or because of the way the light affects the color of their skin and the shadow behind them, or the shape of their nose, etc. But during the process of painting I move away from these things and it becomes about something else not easily expressed verbally." Her work has been shown in New York, Connecticut, and Rome. She studied painting at Bennington College with Pat Adams and SIdney Tillim and received her MFA from Indiana University.
