The Painting Center is pleased to present an exhibition of recent paintings by Alix Bailey. In this, her fourth show at the gallery, she continues to mine the endless possibilities of painting the figure from close observation in the diffused light of her home studio.

The show of mostly large paintings focuses on one model who Bailey has been painting since early in the pandemic when her exploration of multiple figures was cut short. The figure is not merely a vessel serving the greater whole nor is it a portrait, although both these things can be true. The model is playing a part in the enigmatic world of Bailey's painting which does not aim at reality but is guided by formal concerns.

Bailey states that, "One of the rewards of working so closely with the same model over the years is that I come to know them in a way that adds another layer of meaning to the painting. Observing a person over long periods of time, really seeing them is a way of putting them in the light."

In addition to showing her recent work, she has curated the show of her late mother Sandra Stone's paintings in the Main Gallery and Project Room.

Alix lives in New York City and in Columbia County. She has had solo shows in New York City and in Hudson, NY and her paintings have been featured in shows around the country and in Italy. Her work has been reviewed in Hyperallergic, The Hudson Review and Tussle magazine.
