The Painting Center is pleased to present Day in, Day Out, a solo exhibition of recent works by Elizabeth Reagh in the Project Room.

Produced from 2019 to 2021, these works represent the artist’s response to a move from Brooklyn, NY to Sacramento, CA and the concurrent onset of the Covid pandemic. Day in, Day Out references the predictability and routine nature of the days in isolation as well as the subject matter that evolved: views, both inside and out, observed within the confines of the artist’s home and garage studio. A return to California has meant a return to that particular California light, Reagh - a native of Los Angeles, grew up with. The sunlit scenes of flowers, treasured belongings, utilitarian objects, pets and the artist’s backyard reflect the quiet joy one feels upon returning home after a long hiatus. Many of the depicted items were acquired from friends during Reagh’s twenty years in New York, imbuing the still lifes with a subtle nostalgia.

Reagh treats each painting as a new experience with indeterminate outcome and process. Some paintings are primarily done from direct observation and some employ photographs for reference. All the paintings involve some element of intentional distortion and invention.

Elizabeth Reagh received a BFA from San Francisco State University, and a MFA from The University of Oregon. She has exhibited in New York, and California and will be having a solo show at The Be Cool Club Gallery in Sacramento, CA in 2021.
