The Painting Center presents JuxtaPositions, curated by Anthony Cuneo, Alannah Farrell and Robin Feld. Creativity isn’t only about making entirely new things. The creative process can involve seeing old things in new contexts by joining things that previously seemed completely unrelated or turning conventions, tropes and ideas upside down and inside out. Sometimes, these juxtapositions are humorous; sometimes, they are enigmatic or striking; sometimes, they are shocking. High and low, serious and funny, real and fake, observed and invented, political and personal. These are all choices an artist can make in their work. In a culture saturated by imagery, icons, arguments, products, brands and waste, JuxtaPositions brings artists from all over the country who are inventing something new by mining, reframing, re-contextualizing, and re-conceiving some of the ideas and objects that make up the cultural moment in which we live. These artists are exploring different visual elements to create uniquely contrasting effects.

Artists include: Kim Anderson, Anna Berlin, Scott Bertram, Michelle Brandemuehl, Mark Brennan, Anne Buckwalter, Elizabeth Courtney,  Dennis D'Amelio, Lawrence Dobens, Donise English, Nancy Farr Benigni, Gordon Fearey, Mark Ferguson, Robert Franca, Beth Ganz, Bill Gingles, Conny Goelz Schmitt, Gregory Gomez, Lynette Haggard, Bruce Halpin, Barry Hazard, Lisa Hess Hesselgrave, Suejin Jo, Jeff Juhlin, Mark Keffer, Gwenael Kerlidou, Sung Hwa Kim, Amanda Konishi, Melanie Kozol, Sharon Ligorner, Eileen MacArthur, Michelle Mackey, Lucy Maki, Catarina Mantero, Megan Marden, Lisa McCutcheon, Darian Mosluk, Mary Natalizia, Hideyo Okamura, Jared Oppenheim, Raul Ortiz, Susan Osgood, Elizabeth Reagh, Elizabeth Riley, Paul Rinaldi, Judy Riola, Beverly Rippel, Liz Rundorff Smith, Jean Sausele-Knodt, Nick Savides, Åsa Schick, Charlotte Schulz, Winnie Sidharta, Unju Sim, Claire Stankus, Sally Schluter Tardella, Leslie Tucker, Alice Whealin, Dale Williams and Jordan Wolfson.
