The Painting Center is pleased to present From the Inside Out, the work of Kristin Osterberg in the Main Gallery and Project Room.

People familiar with Kristin Osterberg’s work often remark on the haunting, melancholic moods of her figurative paintings. A sensitive observer will find the source of those feelings in loose, fast strokes that capture moments in the lives of her subjects, moments that are always already in the past. For Osterberg, the solidity of art opposes fleeting reality. Often painting on smooth panels to facilitate her spontaneous style, Osterberg takes inspiration from people and things nearby: her friends or family members, domestic scenes or family photo albums. She takes the ordinary as her point of departure and finds the aesthetic power in that ordinariness. Inhabiting worlds of simple, stark beauty, her figures are like most of us, unaware of their surroundings. But they participate, nevertheless, in that fleeting charm and appeal that Osterberg discovers all around her.

Kristin Osterberg was born in New York City. She received her BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design. She exhibits in New York and Westchester. Her work has been sold throughout the United States.
