Press close bare-bosom'd night—press close magnetic nourishing night! Night of south winds—night of the large few stars! Still nodding night—mad naked summer night. ---Whitman In Patrick Webb’s new paintings his ubiquitous Punchinello figure heads out onto the night-time beach. Sometimes in groups of many Punchinelli, sometimes singly, Punchinello stands around, tells stories and undresses to loll about with his friends in the dark and beside bonfires. These paintings, inspired by nights spent on the beaches in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, both as a child and more recently as an adult, explore many aspects of desire, connection, loss and memory. Included in the show are tondos, several smaller studio paintings, figure drawings and premier coups that were painted over the last several summers by the artist “On the Beach, at Night”.
