Chase Cantwell
Chase Cantwell’s latest body of work focuses on the figure. He created a series of oil paintings titled The Portrait Project. The subject matter focuses on artists within his own community. Each artist supplied a photo of themselves head to toe seated in a chair in an environment of their choosing.
The Portrait Project deals with the portrait being intimate and small rather than big and loud, and using empty wall space as a barrier from the others so you have the opportunity to bring yourself deeper into the work. When working on this series, more specifically the piece ‘Becoming Chase’, Chase began to explore his own relationship with gender to a deeper extent.
Chase Cantwell is collected and commissioned in the US and Internationally. He resides and works in West Orange, NJ. He received a BFA from CW Post College and teaches at the Visual Art Center of NJ. Cantwell is also a long-standing member of The Painting Center and has shown with Garvey Simon Gallery, NYC, Adam Peck Gallery, Provincetown, Labspace, Hillsdale, NY, Art Fair 14c.
