Rachel valpone
Rachel Volpone creates abstract paintings and mixed media collages inspired by her fascination with the cosmos, cartography, chance, spirituality, and mental puzzles. Observing traces of chaos in the world around her, Volpone uses her creative practice as a means of centering and grounding herself.
Her work incorporates a diverse range of materials, blending traditional water-soluble media and inks with unconventional elements such as spray paint, colored hot glue, and glitter. Assemblage components—including fabric, crochet scraps, paper, straw, old clothing, vintage jewelry, fake fingernails, and false eyelashes—are seamlessly integrated into her pieces. Gravity plays a pivotal role in her process, which involves pouring, rotating, flowing, dripping, and discovering patterns. Volpone begins working quickly and intuitively before transitioning to a more deliberate phase of close observation, decision-making, and meditation. At this stage, she often overlays repeating motifs and dots to chart a cosmic expansion, resulting in an atmospheric cacophony of possibilities. This approach echoes her collage-making practice, where she treats both mediums as opportunities to pose problems, explore options, and solve puzzles.
Emotion lies at the heart of Volpone's work, both as an expressive force and a subject of exploration. Driven by an innate need to create, she finds the process meditative and challenging—a means of using visual structures to make sense of things that defy explanation. Central to her practice is the creation of compositional spaces where strangeness and chance converge with intention and resolve. Through her art, Volpone celebrates diverse perspectives, inviting others to take joy, find peace, and remain curious while navigating the complexities of existence.
