Karen Schwartz
She is a largely self-taught artist based and showing work in Atlanta and NYC. She works primarily in painting and drawing, often combining the two to learn her materials' characteristics. Her bodies of work veer back and forth from figurative, including large expressionist portraits, to abstract.
“I experiment to see how materials interact. Initial marks build and expand into visually coherent wholes without verbal direction on my part. Painting is an unconsciously driven, active sport played with large, fast gestures. Scraps and debris collaged into smaller works document the "collect and consolidate" aspect of my process.”
